Please set a HDD/SSD password to replace Windows login password

If you are using Windows password to protect your computer, I suggest you use HDD/SSD password to replace it, or setup a bitlocker password to to protect your computer.

Windows Login Password/Power on Password/HDD/SSD Password, which is the most security?

Windows Login Password is the most widely used option to protected a computer, but it is the easiest one for resetting or recovering compare to Power on password and HDD/SSD password.

How long to recover office password with a personal computer

The above data is tested from a personal computer which is worth about $600. The recovery time is maximum recovery time. The really time is sure shorter than the maximum recovery time.

From these data, we can find something interesting:

  1. If we use office 2003 and a simple password to encrypt a office document, the password will be recovered in a few second.
  2. On Test 1, if the password length increases 5, the recovery time will One hundred thousand fold increases. Through calculation, I found that the password length increases one, the recovery time will 26 fold increase.
  3. On test 2, if the password length increases 5, the recovery time will increase Tens of millions of times or more. Through calculation, I found that the password length increases one, the recovery time will increase 92 times.
  4. On test 2, if the password consist of Uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and special characters, maximum recovery time is ten thousand years. From the result, we can see a strong password is very hard to recover with a personal computer.

 Suggestion for keeping your office document safe:

  1. Use the last office version you have to encrypt office document.
  2. Use strong password, includes Uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and special characters, and the password length must be 15 or more.
  3. Keep the password and don't forget it.
